As testing season approaches, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) wants to emphasize the importance of assessments as a fundamental way in which the district knows what students are capable of and wants to share some ways parents can support their children in showcasing their knowledge and skills. While a single moment in time, it does help the district understand the effectiveness of programs, investments, and supports, as well as allow the district to see its growth and impact compared to other school districts across the state.
In addition to other end-of-year testing, students in grades 3-8 and 11 are scheduled to participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP; also known as Smarter Balanced) English Language Arts, Mathematics, and California Science Test. This is a standardized test, meaning students throughout the state will take nearly the same test. The material on the test reflects California’s state standards measuring what students are expected to learn by grade level.
State testing is essential in evaluating proficiency and growth in key academic areas. State tests assess students' current understanding and mastery of standards and skills they've learned throughout the school year. This, coupled with the classroom teachers' assessments and real-time application of what students know, helps the district understand what students are capable of and what they have mastered in school. These assessments provide valuable insights into students' academic progress and readiness for future challenges.
Test results can also impact whether schools receive recognitions and awards, such as Blue Ribbon or California Distinguished School, which many NMUSD schools have had the honor of receiving. This recognition elevates the school’s reputation throughout the community and, in turn, elevates opportunities for current and future students.
There are several ways parents can support their children in performing their best so they can do their best:
-
Create a Supportive Environment: Ensure your child feels supported and encouraged as they approach the testing day. Offer words of encouragement and remind them that you believe in their abilities.
-
Promote Confidence: Help your child build confidence and a positive attitude. Remind them that their hard work and dedication throughout the school year have prepared them for success.
-
Encourage Rest and Relaxation: Emphasize the importance of rest in the days leading up to testing. Ensure your child gets plenty of sleep and engages in activities that help them feel calm and focused.
-
Provide Nutritious Meals: Offer nutritious meals and snacks to fuel your child's body and mind. Eating a balanced breakfast supports cognitive function and concentration during testing.
-
Prioritize Attendance: Arriving on time for school each day will help your child settle before testing begins. We recommend that you avoid scheduling appointments or commitments during the school day.
-
Manage Stress: Teach your child stress-relief techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or visualization to help them stay calm and focused during testing.
-
Celebrate Effort and Growth: Regardless of the outcome, celebrate your child's effort and growth throughout the school year. Acknowledge their progress and achievements in their academic journey.
Your partnership in your child's education is invaluable, let’s help them succeed!
