As warmer temperatures continue across our area, Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) remains focused on supporting safe and comfortable learning environments for students and staff. We closely monitor weather conditions, including information from the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). 

To further support these efforts, NMUSD uses Perry Weather stations within each of our four school zones. These stations provide localized, real-time information about weather conditions in the surrounding school area, including temperature, severe weather, and air quality, helping us make informed decisions about outdoor activities and other necessary adjustments.

Every NMUSD school has procedures in place for high-heat conditions as part of its Comprehensive School Safety Plan. Depending on conditions and individual school needs, these measures may include:

• Adjusting, limiting, postponing, or canceling strenuous outdoor activities
• Modifying instructional activities or schedules as appropriate
• Relocating activities to indoor or cooler areas when available
• Providing opportunities for students and staff to stay hydrated and take breaks from the heat

Please note that CIF has separate heat-related guidelines for secondary students participating in athletics. High school athletic directors will communicate directly with families if any adjustments to CIF practices or games are necessary.
